Dr. Thomas Schindler

In 2010 I obtained an M.A. degree („Magister Artium“) in Logic and Philosophy of Science from the LMU Munich by a thesis on completeness proofs in second-order modal logic which was written under the supervision of Prof. Godehard Link. After that, I was a teaching assistant at LMU Munich and visiting student at MCMP.

From June 2012 to June 2015 I was a doctoral fellow at the MCMP, working under the supervision of Hannes Leitgeb and Jeff Ketland (Oxford). During that period, I received grants to spend time as a visiting scholar at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and the Tilburg Center for Logic, General Ethics and Philosophy of Science (TiLPS). I am the winner of a Junior Research Fellowship at Clare College Cambridge which I will take up in October 2015.
In January 2015, I defended my PhD thesis on type-free truth with highest distinction (summa cum laude).

Research Interests

My PhD thesis focuses on formal (semantic and axiomatic) theories of truth, deflationism, semantic paradoxes and self-reference. My next project is on the logical paradoxes and logicism. My goal is to give an explication and vindication of Gödel’s claim that we may „assume every concept to be significant everywhere except for certain ‚sigular points’ or ‚limiting points’, so that the paradoxes appear as something analogous to dividing by zero.“
My other interest include set theory, philosophy of mathematics (abstraction principles, structuralism), philosophy of language (indeterminacy of reference, Putnam’s model-theoretic arguments, Frege’s puzzle, demonstratives, propositional attitudes, absolute generality), metaphysics (ship of Thesus, possible worlds), philosophy of mind (personal identity, body/mind proble, free will, sense-datum theory) and ethics. I also have an interest in the epistemology of Kant and Schopenhauer, and in the philosophy of Schopenhauer in general.
