Against Scientific Representation
Abstract
Edwin Hutchins’s (2013) conjecture holds that culturalpractices reduce the entropy of the cultural cognitive ecosystem. A minor objective of this talk is to support Hutchins’s conjecture by drawing on theFree Energy Principle (FEP) in computational neuroscience. More importantly, we use that result to replace the semantic dimension of scientific realism with anaccount of enculturation under FEP. The outcome is a version of scientific realism that assimilates the best part of social constructivism (as in the works of David Bloor).
