Title:

A simple theory of acting together

Abstract:

When we are doing something together---painting a house together, for instance---we understand ourselves to be obligated to one another to act appropriately, even in the absence of a preliminary agreement. A satisfactory account of acting together will explain this along with some related observations. I argue that we need to go beyond moral requirements and beyond personal plans and commitments with whatever content and however arrayed in order to provide such an account. As it happens there is a beautifully simple way to do this: by appeal to a joint commitment of the parties.
