Talk: Günther Sandner (Vienna)
Isotype, Logical Empiricism and the Scientific World Conception
The International System of Typographic Picture Education (Isotype) started as the ‘Vienna Method of Picture Statistics’ in interwar Vienna and soon became internationally renowned. The visual education’s mastermind, Otto Neurath (1882–1945), was also a representative of both the Vienna Circle and Logical Empiricism. Thus, Isotype was presented sometimes as a popular version of Logical Empiricism. But what does this mean? How are we to compare a method of visual education with a philosophical movement? Did Isotype make propaganda for the (Vienna Circle’s) ‘Scientific World Conception’ (1929)? Did the picture language explicitly or implicitly refer to Logical Empiricism or its programmatic manifesto ‘Scientific World Conception’? Was there a mutual influence?
