How to do conditionals with assignment variables
I show how a compositional semantics with object-language assignment variables can provide a uniform analysis of 'if'-clauses adjoined to noun phrases, verb phrases, and clauses, and in conditionals with or without an overt modal or proform such as ‘then’. 'If'-clauses are analyzed as free relatives of assignments, interpreted as plural definite descriptions of possibilities. Comparisons between conditional correlatives and correlatives of individuals are briefly considered.
