Title:

When humans and AI disagree

Abstract:

Suppose a human medical doctor thinks a tumor exists in a medical image, while an AI application outputs that there is none. How should the human doctor react?

In this talk, I address this question by drawing on two recent discussions from epistemology. I first investigate whether and under which conditions the AI application can be said to have epistemic authority such that humans should defer to its outputs. I second consider the possibility that the AI application is a peer. I bring positions such as the equal weights and the justificationist view to bear on the case. I conclude with lessons for my example and the debates on authority and peer disagreement.
