Title:
Disability is a Lack of Society-relative Abilities
Abstract:
The view that disability is a lack of certain abilities has recently gained popularity (e.g., Gregory, 2020; Begon, 2023). A key point of disagreement among its proponents concerns which abilities (to do what?) matter. I approach the debate by drawing on some important distinctions within the metaphysics of ability. Attending to these distinctions raises a number of challenges for existing ability-based views and helps motivate a different view: disability is a lack of society-relative abilities.
