Title:

To Oblige and To Be Obliged: a Logical Analysis of Two Deontic Notions

Abstract:

Formal approaches usually ignore the impact of imperatives on the obligations of the receiving agents (although there are some exceptions) or how preexisting obligations could limit the normative ability of the issuer to emit imperatives. Adapting some results from the Logic of Public Announcements, a class of models is described here taking commands as announcements that modify the set of obligations agents have. This requires a previous explanation of how obligations could be ascribed to agents in one initial deontic setting; and how new obligations could arise due to an operation of shrinking the set of ideal worlds open for agents.v
