Title:
From Mathematized Phenomenology to Artificial Phenomenology?
Abstract:
Phenomenology, the systematic study of subjective experience, has long been considered resistant to formalization. Recent work in "mathematized phenomenology" challenges this by suggesting various formal techniques such as topological, category-theoretic, and dynamical-systems approaches to model the structural invariants of consciousness (e.g., intentionality, minimal subjectivity, or time-consciousness). This talk explores how such formal frameworks—designed to capture the transcendental features of subjective experience—might inform artificial phenomenology: Could we engineer systems that exhibit first-person perspectives, or merely simulate behavior? What are the challenges when trying to create data-structures that confirm to phenomenological principles? We critically examine the promises and pitfalls of translating phenomenological primitives into computational architectures, thereby asking questions about synthetic consciousness and the future of consciousness science.
The seminar will take place from 10 to 12 s.t. (please note the start at 10:00) in the MCMP’s larger seminar room (Ludwigstr. 31 / 021).
The seminar will be held in person, but here is a Zoom link for remote participation:
