Title:
Contemporary set theory and the continuum hypothesis
Abstract:
Gödel and Cohen had shown that "how many real numbers are there?" has no answer on the basis of ZFC, the standard axiomatization of set theory. This turned out to be just one instance of the ubiquitous independence phenomenon in set theory. A recent theorem by D. Asperó and the speaker amalgamated two prominent axiomatizations beyond ZFC which gave an answer to the above question. We discuss this and related results from the perspective of a once philosophically educated and now actively working set theorist.
