Title:

Cautious Reasoning with Beliefs

Abstract:

The logic of Cautious Doxastic Reasoning (CDR) is a response to the challenge posed by preface paradox. It saves standard axioms of doxastic logic such as Monotonicity, but restricts the scope of the belief aggregation principle (i.e., closure under conjunction). This way, collapse in the preface paradox is avoided while maintaining partial compatibility with the Lockean Thesis and avoiding contextualism about belief. CDR is well-aligned with pre-theoretical intutions and has very simple and parsimonious principles. The talk then studies the models of CDR, how probability interacts with belief, and the conditions when agents may suspend judgment.
