Title:

In What Sense is Consciousness First Personal?

Abstract:

The idea that consciousness is first personal, or has a first personal character, is so familiar we barely notice it. This paper reviews four main ways of spelling out the idea, before suggesting that, in its most plausible version, it is the claim that consciousness is necessarily connected to first-personal beliefs, at least in rational agents who meet further conditions. The paper also discusses the relation of this proposal to some recent work on consciousness and the first person, particularly that of Christian List.

The seminar will take place from 10 to 12 s.t. (please note the start at 10:00) in the MCMP’s larger seminarroom (Ludwigstr. 31 / 021).

In addition to the Wednesday seminar, we are exploring the possibility of a second, more informal discussion session (a “pre-seminar”) with Daniel Stoljar on the topic of physicalism, to be held on Tuesday 8 July from 14:00 onwards. Would those who would be interested in participating in such an additional session please send me an email?

As usual, the Wednesday seminar will be held in person, but here is a Zoom link for remote participation:
