Title:

A Defense of Peer Review

Abstract:

Heesen and Bright argue “pre-publication peer review should be abolished” (2021, 635). I defend the use of pre-publication peer review. First, drawing on an empirical study of peer review in a leading chemistry journal, I defend the reliability of peer review. Though there is a lack of inter-rater reliability, I argue that there is reason to believe that the ultimate judgments on manuscripts is valid. The papers that are published are better than those that are not. Second, I offer a theoretical framework for understanding what peer review can deliver. Peer review enables editors to effectively identify problems in manuscripts.
