Assistant Professor/Postdoc Positions at the MCMP

The Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP) and the Chair of Philosophy and Decision Theory at the Faculty of Philosophy, Philosophy of Science and Study of Religion at LMU Munich seek applications for up to three fixed-term

Assistant Professors / Postdocs (“Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter”) (m/f/d),
initially for the duration of 3 years,
renewable for another 3 years in the Assistant Professor case.

The intended start date is September 1st, 2021. An earlier start date is negotiable in certain circumstances.

Your responsibilities:

• Independent and collaborative research broadly in the thematic areas of the Chair—including philosophically oriented decision theory, philosophically oriented social choice theory, formal epistemology and formal ethics, and the philosophy of mind and action—and dissemination of such research through participation in seminars, conferences, and workshops.

• Teaching: 5 hours per week. Candidates will be expected to contribute to the teaching offerings of the Chair, also in the context of the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy.

• Participation in other activities at the Chair, including conference and workshop organization, teaching administration, research seminars, reading groups, etc.

• Pursuit of an advanced postdoctoral research project (e.g., a Habilitation).

Your profile:

• Candidates should have completed, or be about to complete, a doctorate in philosophy or a suitable related field (e.g., logic, computer science, or economics). A finished PhD is required by the start date of the appointment.

• Candidates should have a record of producing high-quality research, as evidenced by publications and/or publishable writings of international standard, commensurate with their career stage.

• Candidates should have a strong analytic, logical, and (depending on their research area) mathematical orientation and aptitude.

• Candidates should have excellent teaching skills and be willing to engage in teamwork.

• Candidates should be able to work in English, with respect to both research and teaching.

• Knowledge of German and the ability to teach in German are welcome, but not a prerequisite for these posts.

About the Chair in Philosophy and Decision Theory
The newly created Chair in Philosophy and Decision Theory, held by Christian List, is devoted to the study of foundational questions in decision and social choice theory, formal epistemology and formal ethics, the philosophy of mind and action, and the philosophy of the social sciences. The work of the Chair has an interdisciplinary orientation, emphasizing the exchange of ideas with researchers from neighbouring fields, including in the sciences and social sciences. The Chair’s areas of research and teaching can be subdivided into three broadly defined subfields, with some overlap between them:

• individual decision theory, including theories of rationality, formal epistemology, and formal ethics;

• collective decision theory, including social choice theory, social epistemology, and related areas of social and political philosophy;

• the metaphysics of mind and action and related questions concerning the foundations of the human and social sciences.

The Chair is part of the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy, which offers a world-class environment for research in formally oriented areas of philosophy. Furthermore, LMU’s Faculty of Philosophy has significant strengths across a wide range of different areas of philosophy, theoretical as well as practical, contemporary as well as historical.

Conditions of employment:
Under certain conditions, the post-holder can be appointed as an Akademischer Rat auf Zeit (i.e., temporary civil servant status at A13 level, which requires a completed doctoral degree); otherwise, the salary will be calculated according to group E 13 TVL-employment.

Successful applicants will also have funds available to attend workshops and conferences.
