Further Information

Godehard Link studied mathematics, philosophy, logic, philosophy of science, and linguistics at the LMU, Munich, and MIT, Cambridge, USA. He was a fellow of the "Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes" (German Fellowship Foundation). 1970 Diploma in mathematics (main fields pure mathematics, mathematical logic, probability theory), LMU.

  • 1972-74 research grant, German Research Foundation (DFG), on the foundations of subjective probability.
  • 1974 Dr. phil. in logic and philosophy of science (L+PSci), LMU; dissertation on intensional semantics.
  • 1974-79 „Wissenschaftlicher Assistent“ with W. Stegmüller, at the Seminar for Philosophy, Logic and Philosophy of Science, LMU.
  • 1978 Dr.phil.habil. L+PSci, LMU; "Habilitationsschrift" on the foundations of linguistic semantics.
  • Since 1979 professor for L+PSci, at LMU. Visiting researcher at the Center for the Study of Language and Information (CSLI), Stanford, USA, in the years 1985-86, 1987, and again 1995-96, 1997.
  • 1988-89 guest researcher, IBM Germany, Stuttgart, at the Institute for Knowledge-Based Systems.

Research Interests

Formal Logic, Philosophical Logics (e.g., Modal Logic, Intensional Logic), Philosophy of Mathematics and Logic, Russell Studies, Philosophy of Language, Logic and Semantics of Natural Language (with applications in Linguistics), Formal Ontology, Foundations of Probability, Ruductionism, Neurophilosophy, History of Science.

  • 1992-2001 Faculty member, and since 1995, speaker of the interdisciplinary DFG Graduate Program "Language, Information, Logic" (SIL).
  • 1995-99 P.I. of the DFG research group "Ontological reduction in the light of metamathematical methods" (main researchers: Volker Halbach, Karl-Georg Niebergall).
  • 1997 Organisation of the International Workshop "Concepts of Reduction in Logic and Philosophy", LMU.
  • 2000 Guest Editor, Erkenntnis vol. 53, Nr. 1-2 (2000). – 2001 Organisation of the International Conference „One Hundred Years of Russell’s Paradox“, LMU.
  • 2001–2004 P.I. of the DFG research project (with Prof. M. Folkerts, LMU) „Geschichte der beweistheoretischen Ordinalzahlanalyse und ihre Implikationen für die Philosophie der Mathematik“ (main researcher: Christian Tapp).
  • 2005-2011 German Speaker of the Humboldt TransCoop Research Group (with American partner Prof. M. Detlefsen, University of Notre Dame, USA) on „Imaginary and Ideal Elements and Limit Concepts in Mathematics: Their Theory, History, and Philosophical Understanding“.

  • 2004-08 Prodekan, Fakultät für Philosophie etc., LMU. – 2005 Co-Founder of the research organisation "Munich Center for Neurosciences – Brain and Mind" (MCN) as part of the research initiative LMUinnovativ, LMU.
  • 2005-09 Board Member of the MCN, LMU.
  • 2006-09 Faculty Member und Member of the Scientific Board, Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences (GSN), as part of the German Excellence Initiative.
  • Since 2009 Member of the Kuratorium of the MCN.
