Further Information

Norbert Gratzl completed a Masters (2000; with a focus on an Aristotelian problem of future contingent events) and a PhD (2002; with a focus on the proof-theory of Free Logic) degree in Philosophy at the University of Salzburg. For the academic year 2003 he was a visiting fellow at the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of Irvine/California.  In 2004 he received a FWF-funded project on Deontic Logic. Before coming to Munich Norbert worked at the European Parliament.

Research Interests

Norbert’s research interests are in logic (proof-theory of predicate logic and related systems, deontic logic, definite and indefinite descriptions, argumentation). Recently he started working on – historically and systematically - the use of Hilbert’s epsilon-calculus in analysing theoretical terms; thereby he tries to answer the question if a logical reconstruction of theoretical terms  - as suggested by Carnap – allows for a structuralist interpretation of scientific theories.
